What types of homes will qualify for the tax credit?

Any home that will be used as a principal residence will qualify for the credit, provided the home is purchased for a price less than or equal to $800,000. This includes single-family detached homes, attached homes like townhouses and condominiums, manufactured homes (also known as mobile homes) and houseboats.

It is important to note that you cannot purchase a home from, among other family members, your ancestors (parents, grandparents, etc.), your lineal descendants (children, grandchildren, etc.) or your spouse or your spouse’s family members.

Are there any extra Military benefits with the Home Buyers’ Tax Credit?

Yes, expanded tax credit benefits apply to members of the military, the foreign service and the intelligence community.

Possible Military Benefits

Qualified service members who sell or move from a tax credit home within three years of the initial purchase due to official extended duty are exempt from the recapture rule.
Qualified service members who are ordered on a period of official extended duty, these dates are extended for one year. For these home buyers, the tax credit applies to sales with ratified sales contract in place on or before April 30, 2011 and settled by June 30, 2011.

Home Buyer Tax Credit timeline

A tax credit of up to $8,000 is available for first time home buyers purchasing a primary residence on or before April 30, 2010. What does this mean? In cases where a ratified sales contract is in place by April 30, 2010 and the home purchase is settled by June 30, 2010 then the First Time Home Buyers Tax Credit may qualify.
